Katla Geopark, the first and only geopark in Iceland, was admitted into the The Global Geoparks Network during the 10th European Geoparks Conference, which took place in the Gea Norwegica Geopark (Norway) from 16 to 18 September 2011.  The Global Network of National Geoparks, created under the aegis of UNESCO in 2004, now numbers 87 Geopoarks in 27 countries around the world, including 49 Geoparks in 16 European countries.  The application from the Katla Geopark Project was well received and unanimously accepted.

 The Katla Geopark Project has just published it´s first booklet, colourful 22 pages with a number of pictures, maps and explanatory texts.  The booklet  will be on sale in bookstores and  information centres in the area.  You can preview it here.  Enjoy!

 Three representatives of the Katla Geopark Project will attend the 10th European Geoparks Conference that will take place in Langesund, Telemark county in Norway.

The conference will be hosted by Gea Norvegica Geopark, the first Scandinavian member of the European Geoparks Network.

Sigurður Sigursveinsson, Steingerður Hreinsdóttir and Þuríður H. Aradóttir will give a presentation on the development of the Katla Geopark Project on Sunday afternoon, but on Saturday night announcements will be made of new GGN (Global Geoparks Network) and EGN (European Geoparks Network) memberships and revalidations – then we´ll know if Katla Geopark will be among them!
